This 6 session workshop explores the expressive possibilities of hand-building and sculptural techniques in clay, offering students a comprehensive introduction to creating unique ceramic forms. Whether students are new to clay or looking to enhance their existing skills, this course will cover foundational hand-building methods, including coil building, slab construction, and pinch pot techniques. Participants will also dive into more advanced sculptural approaches, such as carving, surface texturing, and assembling complex forms.
Throughout the workshop, students will be encouraged to experiment with form and texture, allowing them to create both functional and non sculptural works. I will guide participants through the creative process, from initial idea development to final product, with an emphasis on personal expression and exploration. We will also discuss surface treatments, glazing options, and finishing techniques.
By the end of the workshop, students will have a solid foundation of hand-building techniques, technical knowledge , a collection of finished ceramic pieces, and the confidence to continue exploring sculptural clay work independently.
Learning Outcomes:
Master fundamental hand-building techniques (pinching, coiling, slab-building)
Understand sculptural processes such as carving and texturing
Create both functional and non-functional ceramic forms
